Another day, another icon.
Just kidding…

Born from humble beginnings in 1973 on 600 acres of prime Napa real estate, Joseph Phelps didn’t waste time making history. Just a year later, in 1974, Insignia hit the scene—arguably Napa’s first true proprietary Bordeaux-style blend. Was it bold? Absolutely. Was it visionary? No doubt. Fast-forward to 2022, and the label is now under the LVMH umbrella—because legends attract legends.

The 2022 vintage of Insignia is a masterclass in precision and pedigree:
92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec, 2% Cabernet Franc, all aged 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels from some of the most elite coopers in the game (Tarnaud, Sylvain—you know the names).

This isn’t just another Napa Cab. It’s a symphony of seven estate vineyards sourced from across Napa Valley, each bringing serious character to the blend. A third of the fruit comes from Yountville (Oak Knoll District), with supporting roles from the Banca Doras of Rutherford, the rocky terrain of Las Rocas (Stag’s Leap), the volcanic veins of Suscol, and more - Barboza, Home Ranch, El Venadito - each one delivers a distinct thread in the final tapestry.

These vineyard sites are Napa’s upper crust, with gravel, volcanic subsoils, and microclimates that drive depth and dimension. The vines? Many over two decades old and farmed with surgical precision to reflect the best of Napa terroir. What you get in the glass is Napa muscle wrapped in Bordeaux velvet – structured, elegant, and unapologetically expressive. Broody black fruit, earthy tobacco, and generous spice are held together by dense, chewy tannins fuse into a feisty layered finish. This bottle will dance for decades – drink it now or practice patience. The choice is always yours, my friend.

Insignia 2022 isn’t just another bottle - it’s a benchmark. And it's ready to take on the best in the world. This legend WON’T wait – make it yours today!

GROWING SEASON

The 2022 vintage began with mild weather and early budbreak, which ranged from late March to early April. The weather was sunny and mild through August until a heat event in the first week of September, which brought well above average temperatures to most of Napa Valley for several days. This extreme heat meant that there was very little time between the white grape and red grape harvests. We began picking reds on September 9th and ended on October 5th. Careful canopy and vineyard management along with precise fruit selection using our optical sorters were crucial tools in maintaining excellent wine quality.

"Deeply brooding, refined aromas of blackcurrants, bitter chocolate, blood plums, dark cherries, cedar and coffee beans. The palate is full-bodied with firmly framed tannins and bright acidity that lead into a structured yet silky-smooth and savory finish. 92% cabernet sauvignon, 4% petit verdot, 2% malbec and 2% cabernet franc. Great to drink young, or will reward after time in bottle. Drink or hold."
