Glancing back, Philippe Pain launched Domaine de la Commanderie in 1982. Today he runs 120 acres of Loire Valley vineyards with his daughters, Clothilde and Honorine, right in the heart of Chinon – a.k.a. classic Cab Franc country. But the real rebels of the estate? Their Chenin Blanc vines. These 60–80-year-old vines cling to the southern slope of Panzoult (a Chinon commune), refusing to be replaced by more “profitable” grapes. These stalwart white wines represent a teeny tiny 2% of the total Chinon production (98% is Cab Franc). Any Chenin Blanc that’s lasted up to 80 years surrounded by Cabernet Franc has to be making one heck of an argument for its existence.

Well named, “Elegance” shows in every sip. Sandy clay tops limestone rock to give the grapes rich character with a laser spine. In 2019, the family vineyards dove headfirst into organic viticulture. Handpicked, gently pressed, cool fermentations, with months on lees and moderate oak influence give these gorgeous Chinon ambassadors something to talk about! Textured, layered, rich, robust, and distinguished. Showing baked pear, melon, and ripe peach aromas - the wines are alive!
