Bring the shine. With a LONG-Pedigreed run of 90+ points for this classic CdP, the 2020 lands with 95 points from Decanter. Domaine Font de Courtedune CdP is crafted by Rhône rising star Caroline Charrier. Straight from the sandy soils of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, just steps from legendary Château Rayas, this Rhône ranger is definitely dressed to impress!
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the diva of the Southern Rhône. Like any pop-star princess she struts her stuff with bold layers of glitz and glamor, busting out regal red fruit and regional garrigue with poise, power, and ambition. Full-bodied, full-flavored, and sometimes full-of-herself, with CdP there’s plenty to take in from seductive start to fanfare finish.
But, back to the beginning… Caroline Charrier’s grandparents set down roots in Courthézon in 1943, on the eastern edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Did they pick sandy vineyards for strategic winemaking strategy? Nope. The vines were just around the corner from the family farm. Sometimes the easiest moves can make the best wines. Sometimes.
Organically grown, this 99% Grenache (You’re curious? The 1% is Mourvèdre) blend hails from very, very old (90 years!) bush-trained vines, whole bunch fermented, concrete tanks (zero oak), just straight up concentrated sandy soil expression. Expect a round of fresh raspberries and ripe strawberry, with savory garrigue and lovely lavender to debut on the finish.
Give this stunning glass a swirl now or cellar until 2028. Good luck with that!

Only medium-bodied really, this feels quite compact and fresh. The tannins are there, all very fine and packed into the fruit, and there is good acidity, which contributes further to the fresh feel. The alcohol, though present, doesn't feel excessive. Aromatically it’s quite closed, so give it a few years to open, though it has a lovely herbal side to the red fruit flavours. It’s really quite grippy in fact – clearly there is some whole-bunch fermentation. It has intensity and tension, and will be good. A wine that gets better every time I taste it. Produced from grapes grown on sandy soils.
