This opulent fortified wine from Prager Winery & Port Works, a family-run Napa Valley gem founded in 1979 by Jim and Imogene Prager - proves California can absolutely crush Port-style wines. Pulling premium fruit from sites like the Paladini Vineyard, their Royal Escort is an inky, Petite Sirah-powered beast. Bold, polished, and dripping with Douro soul dressed in Napa class. The 2021 Prager Royal Escort marks their first vintage declaration in six years, powered by 100% Petit Sirah and a warm growing season that pumped up concentration and structure. A stint in small French oak adds a touch of toast, it’s tradition-meets-innovation in a valley famous for Cabernet but secretly brilliant at Port.

The Pour: Deep, inky purple. Aromas come in hot with blackberry, boysenberry, and dark plum, followed by a moody mix of dark chocolate, espresso, violet, and a sultry splash of oak spice and graphite.

On the palate, it’s full-bodied and plush. Velvety tannins wrap around ripe black fruits, plus savory hits of sea salt chocolate, fig, pepper, and a cheeky twist of black licorice. Firm acidity and a touch of minerality keep everything in line, wrapping up with a long, sweet finish. Rich. Hedonistic. Structured. Completely capable of aging another decade and quite possibly two – IF you can wait that long (unlikely).
