Black Kite Sierra Mar Chardonnay
The kind of California Liquid Gold that makes you lick your lips in anticipation and lingers on palate for what seems like an eternity.
Black Kite is the name, and putting focus on specific sites to produce exceptional wines is their game. And their 2016 Chardonnay from the sun-drenched hillsides of Sierra Mar Vineyard is the heroine of today's fable. Sierra Mar Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands is one of those truly special plots of dirt. Sitting at 1,000 feet above sea level, its soil is a prehistoric mix of decomposed granite and gravelly loam, perfect for producing world-class fruit that basks in the central California sunshine til it’s perfectly ripe and ready to pick.
Mentored by the legendary Dick Arrowwood, winemaker Jeff Gaffner, who is also consults for Hestan Cellars, Three Sticks, Xtant, and has his own label Saxon Brown, manages to extract every bit of love out of this fruit to end up with a finished product that’s downright sensual. His talents are known far and wide, and was at the helm of Cinq Cepages (Chateau St. Jean’s premiere label) when the 1996 Cinq Cepages won Wine Spectator Wine of the Year in 1999. This dude has California legacy running through his veins and Black Kite embodies everything that we love about Jeff’s talents.
What makes this wine so scintillatingly spectacular is its combination of ethereal elegance combined with its full-bodied soul. Mountain grown character is on full display, elevated unctuous aromas of Acacia blossoms, green apple, honeysuckle, lemon zest and spiced pear lead into an expansive mouthful of orchard fruit, white peach, ripe pear, warm spices, and lemon custard. This is picture perfect California Chardonnay that presses all the right buttons and keeps you coming back for more.
Summer has most certainly arrived, and a chilling and thrilling California Chardonnay is the perfect answer to the impending sweltering heat. Throw in a solid 94 points from Antonio Galloni and the lowest price in the galaxy, and we’re making this too easy for you.
Bask in the glow and soak it up… this single vineyard stunner won’t last long.
