M. Chapoutier La Combe Pilate IGP Collines Rhodaniennes 2018
If there’s one producer from the Rhone Valley that we just can’t sing the praises of enough, it’s M. Chapoutier.
Michel Chapoutier’s name is synonymous with greatness, and in these parts, he’s vinous royalty! The fifth generation to spearhead this fabled winery, and his great-great-grandfather Marius purchased an estate and some vineyards in the now famous village of Tain l'Hermitage in the Northern Rhône Valley. Marius Chapoutier made history in the region when he became the first grape grower there to vinify his own fruit.
A visionary and pioneer in biodynamic winemaking, Michel’s tireless work ethic and eternal commitment to quality have produced unparalleled success, with the most 90+ point ratings of all Rhone producers, and 16 100-Point rated wines (yes, you read that right!).
And we have another double 90 pointer that’ll have you howling with intense delight!
This 100% Viognier is simply stunning, as the pale golden hue caresses the glass, erupting with sensual aromatics of flint, bergamot, ripe peach and hints of smoke. The palate is perfect, with a lovely balance of energetic tension, nerve and a softened mid-palate due to a few years in bottle. A savory finish leads with layers of honeyed minerals and stone fruits, with enough acidity to pierce through anything you throw at it.
A Condrieu-like white wolf in Chapoutier sheep’s clothing… put the children to bed and go out on the prowl looking for dinner.
A big hit of apricots and peaches, delivered with a slightly smoky, sherbet-like texture.
Made from 100% Viognier, the 2018 IGP Collines Rhodaniennes La Combe Pilate has a ripe, Condrieu-like perfume of buttered tropical fruits, apricots, and honeyed flowers. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, and textured, it's a smoking Viognier that's geared for the dinner table.
