Dunham Cellars XXII Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
That’s the first emotion we feel as soon as we popped the cork.
Cabernet comes in many forms, and these days, though there is plenty of big and bombastic juice that we absolutely love, but the price tag (north of $150 or more these days) tends to have us shying away for obvious reasons. We may work in Napa Valley, but money doesn’t grow on vines you know, and we need to find value wherever it hides.
Especially when that value comes in the lovely and luxurious form of a classically perfect Cabernet Sauvignon.
Dunham Cellars out of Columbia Valley has consistently been a force in the state of Washington, and their 22nd vintage of this stellar offering from a killer 2016 vintage (hence the XXII as part of its name) is everything we crave in luscious, dense and decadent Cabernet without the hefty tariff.
Quite refreshing if you ask us.
There are plenty of expletives we could use to show just how good this wine is, but anyone can talk dirty, and we refrain from cheap tricks to get our point across. We’d rather keep this a PG performance, so words like yummy, gulpable, generous, and spectacular are just a few that come to mind.
If you need more adjectives, throw in classic, concentrated, exceptional, mouthwatering, energetic and downright delicious!
Deep aromatics of black currants, wild blueberry cobbler, black raspberries, pomegranate, cola, spiced cocoa powder and roasted espresso make for a truly intoxicating start to the liquid show. Throw in elegant tannins, a thin black veil of acidity, and beautiful mineral-laced tension, and you have a classic Cabernet that rivals your favorite every day Cab from California… and dare we say, Napa Valley. Throw in the fact that good ol’ Jeb Dunnuck dropped a 93 on this beauty, and now you have something to talk about.
We’ll wait a minute til you pick your jaw up off the floor.
Are you back? Good. Hit buy and see what all the fuss is about.
A blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and the rest Merlot and Malbec, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon XXII is another gorgeous wine from this estate. Aged 19 months in 52% new French oak, it’s a fresh, nicely focused, medium to full-bodied effort that has classic crème de cassis fruit as well as notes of lead pencil, violets, subtle oak, and a gravelly, earthy minerality. Drink it any time over the coming 15 years or more.
