Get ready to pop some serious Napa Valley vibes with today’s deal: the 2019 Ink Grade Cabernet Sauvignon! This isn’t your momma’s Cab—it’s a big boned, bold beauty from the steep volcanic slopes of Howell Mountain, crafted by the feisty team at Ink Grade Estate.Â
The Ink Grade Estate Vineyard offers a rare perspective of Napa Valley. Tucked high in the Vaca Mountain Range surrounded by dense pine forests and scattered sequoias, it sits in the northeastern reaches of the Howell Mountain AVA. The vines are carefully planted on terraces with elevations reaching up to 2,200 feet and intentionally rooted in volcanic "tufa" soils. Shaped by the dramatic landscape and significant diurnal, the grapes develop outstanding color, vibrant flavor, firm acidity, and complex aromatics.Â
Ink Grade has been proudly family-owned since 1873, when President Ulysses S. Grant signed over the land deed to Theron Ink—a Napa Valley pioneer and one of California’s most accomplished agriculturists. Shortly after Theron snapped up the land, he moved his family to the rugged slopes of Howell Mountain and planted the first vines.Â
This Howell Mountain Cab kicks off with a stunning nose—bursting with pomegranate, blackberry, cherry, and savory hits of olive tapenade and fresh herbs. It’s medium-bodied but no lightweight, with firm mountain tannins and a streak of minerality that drives through a long, seductive, and very persistent finish.
Built on 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Merlot, and aged to perfection in French oak, this bottle punches well above its weight—an under-the-radar stunner from a hidden corner of Napa that seriously overdelivers.
Grab your glass and fill ‘er up. This one won’t last long!Â

"Praised for a nose of pine needle, flowers, currants, and ripe plums, the wine is medium-bodied with fine, polished, and tight tannins. Suckling described its clarity and energy as "vivid," noting it is made from biodynamically grown, Demeter-certified grapes and can be drunk or held."
– James Suckling
