A VinePals Best Seller!

Martin Ray is California wine royalty with rebel roots. From 1943 on, he was making single-varietal, site-specific wines in the Santa Cruz Mountains before the trend was even on the American wine horizon. Trained by legend Paul Masson, Ray launched Mount Eden - now a California icon with swanky Burgundian soul.

Flash to the 1980s: winemaker Courtney Benham discovers 1,500 cases of Ray’s wines in a random warehouse (literal treasure hunt), gets hooked, and buys the brand. Today, from the heart of Napa Valley, Martin Ray continues the legacy of crafting terroir-driven wines with history, precision, and place in every sip.

This single-vineyard 2022 Howell Mountain Cab snagged 95 points from James Suckling and is throwing some serious shade at espresso lovers with Suckling’s notes of ā€œcoffee bean and dark bitter chocolate.ā€

Candlestick Ridge Vineyard is perched at 1,400 feet on decomposed volcanic ash and red clay. This site gets double the rainfall of the valley floor - but thanks to its ultra-porous soils, the vines stay stressed, focused, and flavor-packed.

In the bottle, cassis and blackberry meet dark cherry, violet, and lavender. Savory tones of tobacco leaf and clove bring an earthy edge, while dark chocolate and cedar stack in richness and structure. Powerful yet poised, with vibrant acidity driving a long, commanding finish. New French oak rounds out at a substantial 80% of the barrel profile for the 2022 rendition.

Grab a glass - this Cab leaves nothing on the table!

ā€œPlush aromas of blackberries, coffee beans, dark bitter chocolate, graphite and cedar. The palate is full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and balanced acidity, giving notes of blood plums, blackcurrants, tobacco leaves and dried herbs. Well balanced and generous. Drink or hold.ā€

- James Suckling
